Breeyn McCarney: F/W 2010 - 2011 - Hard-Boiled Wonderland

(Inspired by the novel; “Hard-Boiled Wonderland” by Haruki Murakami.)

Firstly, I must give a HUGE thanks to Breeyn and her team for inviting Queen West and the Random Press to her show last night. It was held at The Courthouse in Toronto and it was a perfect venue for the show. Sometimes fashion shows can be a little stiff and dry, but not this one. It had some great music, awesome surroundings and many friendly fashion lovers to mingle with.

The first thing that struck me about the collection was the colour palette. From greys to blues, pinks to whites, the colours were very cohesive and easy on the eye. Something you look for for the F/W Season. Sometimes designers want to do too much - too many conflicting patterns and colours and then you’re not left with a lasting impression. This was NOT the case with Breeyn’s line.

While watching the show you felt as if you were in well, go figure, a wonderland. I felt calm and excited at the same time, a perfect mix of emotions. I sat and waited anxiously wondering what garment was going to come out next.

The fabrics that were used all flowed beautifully on the runway. The choice of silks, mohair, cotton/bamboo jersey, rabbit and distressed cotton all moved perfectly as the models walked. Wearing great clothes (which I assume were pretty cozy) with a perfect fit made them look comfortable, confident and beautiful.

The ’little’ details that I assume took hours; the hand-painting, the beading, lace, hand-knitted silk, mohair and wool all stood out and looked beautiful on the runway. The time was well worth it.

Congrats to Breeyn, the models, make-up artists, hairstylists, D.J’s (Justin Tyce and Fawn) and Gail (Magnet Creative Management) for putting one of the best shows in recent time.

Were hoping to have an interview with Breeyn up here soon, so keep on the look-out for that!
